An exciting new project is underway! Coordinated by Southern New England Landcare, the Rural Fire Service and Never Never Resources the HotSpots project looks at the impacts of fire on the Northern Tablelands. The project provides landholders in the Northern Rivers catchment who have extensive amounts of native vegetation on their property a broad range of opportunities. Landholders who participate in the program will be eligible to apply for any incentive funds that may be available in the second year of the program. Other benefits for landholders include an opportunity to find out about the latest fire science and work with neighbours on a joint approach to Fire Management Plans (FMPs). There is an opportunity to talk with the Rural Fire Service and local brigades and to observe fire operations (a prescribed burn). The project consists of three workshops, the first will be a field based workshop looking at the science of fire ecology and will include take home information. The second workshop will include the development of a Fire Management Plan for your property and the third workshop will be a demonstration burn. Resources available include assessments of vegetation and fire ecology for selected sites, air photographs and digital maps of FMP areas. The first workshop will be held in October. If you are interested in taking part in the HotSpots project you need to attend all three events over the nine months of the project and complete the Fire Management Plan developed for your site. Funding from the Northern Rivers CMA is gratefully acknowledged.
